Stay Clear of A & E, Public Warned Over Noro Virus

by isleofman.com 24th February 2009

Following several recent suspected cases of Norovirus (the winter vomiting virus), the Isle of Man’s Director of Public Health, Dr Parameswaran Kishore (pictured), has urged people not to visit Noble’s or Ramsey Cottage Hospital for advice, as the spread of the virus could result in a major outbreak.

“Please do not visit A & E at Nobles or the Minor Injuries at Ramsey & District Cottage Hospital” Dr Kishore stated. “If you need medical advice, please contact your doctor by telephone rather than visit the surgery”.

He has also issued the following guidelines:

- Wait for 48 hours after cessation of all symptoms before returning to work, as the virus continues to ‘shed’ for a further 48 hours. The virus is often spread by people who have made a full recovery and do not realise that they are still infectious.

- Do not visit hospitals or care homes for at least 48 hours after symptoms are resolved. The virus can have serious health implications for the elderly and those with other illnesses.

- Ensure that scrupulous hygiene precautions are followed at home. The virus is ‘self-limiting’ and will subside in 2-3 days.
