Minister's regret over jazz festival decision

by isleofman.com 19th February 2009
The minister for tourism and leisure has responded to criticism following the decision not to fund the Isle of Man Jazz Festival this year.

Martyn Quayle has issued a statement in which he expresses regret that his department cannot provide financial support.

Mr Quayle says it is the department's aim to promote cultural events for the economic benefit of the Island.

He goes onto say jazz festival committee asked for ?20,500 to fund it this year, with a forecast of 266 visitors.

Last year 320 visitors were expected and the cost was ?19,500.

The minister says that although the department strives to attract and maintain events, it was decided the festival did not bring sufficient visitors to the Island to warrant continued financial support.

He says that over a number of years the department has raised concerns with the jazz festival committee on how visitor numbers could be increased, but despite efforts this has not proved possible.
