'Fundamental changes needed in running of government'

by isleofman.com 18th February 2009
Liberal Vannin Party leader Peter Karran was the only person to vote against yesterday’s budget in Tynwald.

He says tough decisions lie ahead for the Island and he wanted to see them addressed by Treasury Minister Allan Bell.

Mr Karran says the budget is a positive one, but he wants to see fundamental changes in the way government conducts business.

He told Manx Radio why he couldn’t vote for the taxation and spending package:

"The profile of the budget gives confidence outside, but the reality is that we don't need the stagnation in the corridors of power that we have got.

"I'm not undermining the Public Accounts Committee, I'm actually saying that if we got the right changes in maybe we would get the right efficiencies in.

"We can't afford to run the place how it's being run, and this budget will not address that issue."
