"Headless chicken" claim in transsexual row

Outspoken comments by an MHK on the Gender Recognition Bill are "typical of a man who seems to jump up and down like a headless chicken every time anything of a sexual nature is discussed".

That's the verdict of Tony Duggan, the convenor of the gay and lesbian organisation Carrey Friend, who says he was "appalled but not surpised" when North Douglas member John Houghton told the House of Keys on Tuesday that proposed gender recognition laws "defied common decency".

Mr Houghton, who stands by everything he said, was the only MHK to oppose the second reading of the legislation and his remarks prompted Ramsey MHK Allan Bell to express disgust at what he called "an appalling piece of bigotry".

The Bill would allow transsexual people to have their new gender recognised under Manx law.
