MHK wants greater input into IOM budget

by isleofman.com 12th February 2009
An MHK is looking to change the way the Isle of Man budget is dealt with before it goes to Tynwald.

Rushen member Juan Watterson wants members to have more time to scrutinise its details, and the ability to vote on separate elements of it, rather than the current all or nothing approach.

Mr Watterson is to seek permission to bring forward a Private Member's Bill.

He told Manx Radio more people should have a say about what goes into the budget:

"How much scrutiny of the budget is there?

"If you are a member of the public, you hear it on the morning of budget day, and it's voted on that afternoon. You get no say in it whatsoever.

"We, as members, have to keep the contents of the budget secret, for the week that we have it, so even then how much independent scrutiny, how much independent debate, will actually go into the budget?

"It's easy to come up with a lot of wish lists, I think it's better though if members can actually take part in shaping the budget.

"It's on the front page of my manifesto, and this is one of the things that I think will promote openness."
