'Dawsey' memorial - new home needed

by isleofman.com 11th February 2009
A memorial to a Manx hero may have to find a new home as the Department of Transport improves the Bottleneck car park.

The granite drinking fountain and water trough commemorates the life and achievements of David 'Dawsey' Kewley who died in 1904.

He was a former Steam Packet boatman and Lifeboat Service volunteer who was honoured three times by the Royal Humane Society for his life-saving exploits.

Douglas Council says, as work goes ahead on the car park, it may need to move the memorial.

But it adds that any site must be fitting for a Manxman whose exceptional courage and selflessness saved the lives of so many people.
