MEA chairman looks to shed light on oversize bill

Manx Electricity Authority chairman Quintin Gill says he will check how a customer was given an abnormal bill of ?21,000.

The matter was raised by North Douglas MHK John Houghton who said a constituent had previously had a bill of ?900 directly debited from their account, and was issued with another quarterly bill of ?14,000

It's not normal practice for an abnormal bill to be directly debited, and Mr Houghton claimed it was an abuse of the system by the MEA.

Mr Gill admitted system error had caused the bill of ?14,000 to be issued and, while the sum hadn't been taken from the account, an apology had been given to the customer.

He added that any system that relied on transferring data had a risk of user or input error and while there were several layers of checking for abnormal readings and bills over specified limits, mistakes could still occur:
