Athlete could go to sports stadium!

Is the Villa Marina arcade the right place for a newly refurbished statue?

It's been announced a figure of a sprinter, which used to be in the rose gardens off Clifton Terrace in Douglas, is to be put on public display again after being in storage for some years.

It had been removed after suffering attacks by vandals.

Douglas councillor Stephen Pitts hopes it will be possible to display the figure in the newly refurbished arcade.

But architectural historian Peter Kelly says the figure, which was previously one of a pair of sport themed bronzes on the gates of Ballamoar Castle in Jurby, should be put in a more suitable location.

He told Manx Radio:

"I suppose the worry is further vandalism, which is a great shame in this modern day and age.

"But, at Noble's Park there is a brand new restaurant, there are other indoor facilities there and I am sure set part way up the staircase or in the restaurant, or wherever, he would be seen.

"Equally, if schemes go ahead down at The Bowl, where it's not always been used just for football - the inter-school sports used to take place there - perhaps in the revamp down there, this chap could be found a home."
