Festival needed 'jazzing up' - Lowey

by isleofman.com 9th February 2009
The Department of Tourism and Leisure will come under scrutiny in the Legislative Council tomorrow, over the recent cancellation of this year's Isle of Man Jazz Festival.

Eddie Lowey will ask about the DTL's decision to withdraw its support for the event, which had been running for 16 years.

He will ask further questions about funding for other events and the planned uses of the newly refurbished arcade at the Villa Marina.

Mr Lowey, a former political member of the DTL, is disappointed the festival isn't going ahead.

He told Manx Radio:

"The Jazz Festival needs, 'jazzing up', and maybe it has been in the same formula for too long, but the answer to this is simple.

"Has the department had any talks with the organisers to freshen the festival up?

"As far as I'm aware, the only meaningful dialogue that has taken place was a letter saying 'well done, you've done very nicely, but we're not supporting you now'."
