Challenge to fast-food giant

by isleofman.com 9th February 2009
Douglas Borough Council is challenging one of the Island's biggest fast-food outlets to support another campaign to keep the town's streets clear of discarded food and drink cartons.

According to a recent survey in the United Kingdom, more litter comes from McDonalds than any other business of its type, and council leader David Christian is asking the American company to face up to its responsibilities.

Councillor Christian says McDonalds was very supportive of the 'Don't Rubbish Douglas' campaign in 2007, and is hoping for a similar level of commitment this time.

He told Manx Radio:

"They handed out T-shirts and lots of other things, and actually took part in the main day's event, where we did major clean-up campaigns all around the borough.

"We collected a phenomenal amount of rubbish, out of hedgerows, over banks and out-of-sight areas, (with) different teams, led by members of the council.

"They (McDonalds) got actively involved then, so we are hoping we can get the likes of them actively involved again because it can't be good for their business to hear they've come top of the list for the amount of fast-food litter in the adjacent isle, and we're pretty confident that if the same campaign was run here they would be pretty much to the top of that list."
