Internet dangers - youngsters to get advice

by isleofman.com 8th February 2009
Children in the south of the Island will be learning about the potential dangers of the internet in the next week.

The Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team has organised Safer Internet Week to coincide with Safer Internet Day on Tuesday.

All school children will be given a leaflet highlighting some of the dangers and telling them where to go for more advice.

Safer Internet Week was formed by the Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team following a drop-in session at Castle Rushen High School where police and pupils discussed 'safe surfing'.

At this session they learnt many young people had accidentally become victims of viruses, sometimes by clicking on something that looked completely innocent.

Other dangers recognised by the SNPT include chat rooms, blog and social networking sites, where children can end up talking to strangers.

The police also learnt that many parents don't know what their children are using the computer for.

All children at the Island's primary schools and the Buchan will be given the flyer, advising them to visit an interactive website teaching them how to use computers safely.
