'We can deliver', commissioner vows

Onchan Commissioners insist they CAN deliver on their promises to local residents in the coming financial year, despite setting a rate below the current rate of inflation.

Rates bills are to go up by 1.5 per cent from April, a rise of 4p in the pound, to 266p.

Commissioners say, for most people, this will be a little over 1p per day.

It's in contrast to last year's rates rise of nine per cent, widely seen as leading to several members losing their seats at the subsequent local authority election.

Projects in the pipeline include more street lighting, new safety surfaces at play parks, improvements to the library and a scheme to insulate local sheltered housing complexes.

Lead member for Finance Ernie Thorn says the authority will have to use some of its reserve funds:
