Electronic tagging - plans to extend use

Plans to extend the potential uses of electronic tagging are pressing on.

The system involves a transmitter device being fitted to a persons ankle and works by sending a signal to a control centre in the UK. It tells authorities that an offender is at an approved location for a specific time.

The Department of Home Affairs intends to extend the use of them to include a wider range of offenders, including people on bail and those on community orders.
