Mixed results in lighting survey

Douglas councillors are are to 'monitor' the effects of new street lighting at the far end of Ballanard Road for six months, after receiving a mixed response to a survey of residents in the area.

A questionnaire was sent out following complaints the lamps were intrusive and inappropriate, in what was seen by some as a rural location.

Of the 26 questionnaires returned, 62 per cent of respondants said the standard of lighting had improved, and 73 per cent said they felt safe walking alone at night.

But 65 per cent said it wasn't comfortable, and 69 per cent felt it was an intrusion into their homes.

Works Committee chairman Ritchie McNicholl says no major changes will be made for the time being, but there are ways of reducing the impact:
