Motor insurance dodgers beware!

by isleofman.com 7th February 2009
A Rushen MHK is suggesting 'automatic number-plate recognition' cameras could be introduced in the Isle of Man, to catch people whose cars aren't insured.

In the House of Keys on Tuesday, Juan Watterson will ask how many uninsured vehicles are on the Island's roads, and whether the Department of Transport is planning to introduce such technology.

He wants to assess the scale of the problem and says, if it is an issue, the system may be useful.

He told Manx Radio:

"Depending on the scale of the problem, it might be worth the capital investment, either for vehicles coming off the boat, to ensure they are properly taxed and insured, but also in police vehicles driving around to make sure people on our roads are properly taxed and insured.

"At the moment, I'm not entirely sure what the enforcement mechanisms are.

"It's used extensively in the UK - most traffic vehicles in the UK have ANPR systems fitted in - so it's not new, pioneering technology.

"It's just a matter of making sure that we are keeping tabs on the problem in the Isle of Man."
