Bowl plans scuppered by lack of support

by isleofman.com 6th February 2009
A Douglas councillor says the lack of progress on the redevelopment of the Bowl is down to insufficient support.

Colin Cain is a member of the Corporation's Policy and Resources Committee which announced earlier this week that a ?2.5 million project was unlikely to go ahead in time for the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games because of a lack of funding.

That was countered by Tourism Minister Martyn Quayle, who says the plans submitted by Douglas Corporation aren't detailed enough.

Mr Cain (pictured) now says that isn't the case, and backing from government has been somewhat half-hearted.

He told Manx Radio:

"We had gone into, not a fully detailed propsal, but we did need some form of response from government and any other sponsor, otherwise it was pointless us spending any further money on any other detail.

"If you're not going to show any interest, and you're not going to look at the plans that we have got, then we're obviously not going to spend any more money in developing it further."

As for progressing the scheme in the near future, while Mr Cain says it's not impossible, he doesn't think progress is very likely.
