Cigarette probably caused fatal fire

by isleofman.com 6th February 2009
A verdict of accidental death has been recorded at an inquest on a house fire victim.

Twenty-one year-old Marc Stuart Murphy died in his flat at Rowany Court, Port Erin following a night out with his family, last December.

A forensic scientist told the inquest he believed the fire started in Mr Murphy's bedroom, and was most likely caused by a discarded cigarette.

Tests showed Mr Murphy's blood was 56 per cent saturated with carbon monoxide, which would have caused oxygen starvation.

However, the cause of death was given as burns and inhalation of fire fumes.

Coroner Michael Moyle commended fire fighters for their efforts in dealing with the incident, and appealed to the public to fit smoke and fire detectors in their homes.

Mr Murphy's flat had no fire safety devices.
