Drowned man had been drinking heavily

An open verdict has been recorded at an inquest into the death of a 50 year-old man who drowned at Glen Mooar.

The body of Ralph Wyn Roberts, of nearby Kirk Michael, was found by a member of the public on January 17.

He hadn't been seen since the previous morning.

Police are satisfied there was no third party involved in Mr Roberts' death, and could find no evidence to suggest he intended to take his own life.

A post mortem revealed Mr Roberts died from sea water drowning. It also showed a blood alcohol level of 307 milligrams, at which point a person would normally be expected to be vomitting, or even blackout.

Despite this, Mr Roberts' blue Citreon car was found in a car park near the beach with the keys still in the ignition.

Mr Roberts was on police bail and failed to keep an appointment at a police station the day before his body was found.

Coroner Michael Moyle said it wasn't possible to know how Mr Roberts came to be in the sea.

He added that it was the second death in the last few weeks where alcohol appeared to have played a prominent part, and said others should remember to drink in moderation.
