MNFU warns dogs could be shot

by isleofman.com 4th February 2009
'Keep your dog under control if you are out in the countryside and near livestock.'

That plea comes from the Manx National Farmers' Union following a recent spate of attacks on sheep, some of which were fatal.

General secretary of the MNFU Belinda Leach says it's a crucial time of year for farmers as the lambing season approaches, and even being chased can cause problems for pregnant ewes, and possible miscarriages.

She says there could be serious consequences for dog owners who don't heed the advice, as farmers are well within their rights to contact police or even take matters into their own hands.

She told Manx Radio:

"Producers are legally entitled to shoot dogs who are worrying their stock.

"I'm sure not everyone would want to take that route - however, if stress is being caused or attacks are taking place I think it may be a necessary route.

"If a land owner is able to identify a dog's owner, they can claim compensation for injured or dead animals."
