OFT launches air routes investigation

by isleofman.com 3rd February 2009
An investigation is to be carried out by the Office of Fair Trading, following the announcement two new air routes are to be launched later this year.

Flybe/Loganair will be offering flights to Belfast and Blackpool from the Isle of Man from May, but Manx2.com, which operates on the routes, says they are already well served.

Chief Officer of the OFT Nick Black (pictured) says Manx2 is entitled to ask for the investigation.

He told Manx Radio:

The Fair Trading Act provides for investigations into anti-competative practices, and ultimately into action being taken to prevent anti-competative practices and ensure fair competition between businesses.

"For us, an anti-competative practice is something which could restrict or distort competition in connection with goods and services supplied on the Island.

"If we have reason to believe that there may have been some anti-competative practices, the Council of Ministers can consider that, and direct us to undertake a preliminary report, and further if necessary."
