Delicate subject to be tackled by Gill

by isleofman.com 27th January 2009
The House of Keys sits today for the first time in 2009.

There are 13 items on the question paper, and a total of 17 proposed new clauses and schedules to be considered for the Constitution and Social Security (Amendment) Bills.

There is also a highly delicate motion in the name of Rushen MHK Quintin Gill, who wants to introduce a Bill to prohibit an ancient tradition which has been carried out on an estimated 140 million girls and women worldwide.

The World Health Organisation says in Africa about three million girls a year are affected by the practice of female genital mutilation, which has no health benefits.

Mr Gill (pictured) wants to ensure that if it was ever carried out on the Island, those responsible would be committing a criminal offence.

In question time, Michael MHK David Cannan will ask about the monetary value of recycled waste products such as paper, cans and glass.

And he will ask whether the collection of rubbish for recycling is financially viable.

South Douglas MHK Bill Malarkey will ask whether the Office of Fair Trading has received the Steam Packet's accounts for the year 2006 to 2007.

There's also a topical item from Rushen MHK Juan Watterson, who has questions relating to the cost of coal in the Isle of Man.

Question time will be broadcast live on our AM frequency, of 1368, from 10am.
