Music download deal 'a long way off'

by isleofman.com 21st January 2009
There has been a u-turn over proposals to allow people in the Isle of Man to download unlimited music from the internet.

Yesterday, it was announced that for a mandatory tiny fee each year, music-lovers would have access to anything they wanted, completely legally.

But today it’s emerged people could still opt-out of the proposal, which would cost almost 20 times more than first thought and still wouldn’t cover all music available.

E-business inward investment manager Ron Berry (pictured), who is currently at a music industry conference in Cannes, says any deal is still a long way off.

He told Manx Radio:

"It's by no means a fait accompli at all.

"We negotiated, or we had chats, with a couple of the internet service providers on the Island, and floated the idea with them.

"They were supportive of the idea, but obviously there's an awful lot that you need to drill down.

"The music business is an extremely complicated business and people cannot do things like this overnight.

"It can take an awful long time."
