Government building closed by flood

by isleofman.com 21st January 2009
Markwell House in Douglas will be closed until next week due to a flood inside the DHSS headquarters building.

A pipe burst overnight and an assessment is continuing of the damage and whether the integrity of the building has been affected.

Business editor John Moss has been inside (play attached audio file):

The latest statement from the DHSS says Markwell House (pictured) will not be open for the remainder of the week, due to a flood.

Excessive water damage has affected computer and other electronic services.

The DHSS is advising social security customers to ring 685656 or 685026.

It says today's benefits will be issued as normal, and claims made by telephone from today will be marked with today's date.

The DHSS is apologising for any disruption and says it is trying to minimise loss of services.

Customers are asked to keep calls to social security to a minimum, and a further update will be given at 5pm.
