Island could attract more European visitors

by isleofman.com 15th January 2009
The tourism minister believes the current exchange rates could benefit the Isle of Man when it comes to attracting European holidaymakers.

Martyn Quayle (pictured) says the present economic uncertainty in the United Kingdom could lead to a reduction in short weekend breaks, but the Island could profit in other areas.

He told Manx Radio:

"The UK is our main source of business and, apart from the job losses and lack of confidence - which are affecting holiday decisions - we understand from our monitoring of the situation that people are more likely to cut back on their small weekend breaks throughout the year, while trying to preserve their main holiday.

"The strength of the pound against the Euro is having a big effect, and that's why a lot of people are now more likely to holiday within the United Kingdom.

"It does, however, offer us a chance to attract more people from continental Europe, because they will find the costs on the Isle of Man very much cheaper than what they did a year ago."
