'Tombstoning' charge thrown out!

by isleofman.com 15th January 2009
The Isle of Man has gained some welcome extra publicity in the United Kingdom, after complaints about a TV advertisement promoting outdoor sports in the Island were thrown out.

Viewers told the Advertising Standards Authority an advert showing local resident Keirron Tastagh leaping off a cliff into the sea was an irresponsible endorsement for the craze of tombstoning.

But the Authority disagreed, ruling Keirron was safely demonstrating the legitimate sport of coasteering.

Marian Kenny reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

The Ads currently being aired on TV feature local people enjoying different aspects of life in the Isle of Man.

To the voiceover, 'this is where I work, and this is what I do', Keirron Tastagh is filmed canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling and coasteering.

Keirron is qualified and insured in adventure tourism and was show dressed in full safety equipment.

The ASA said coasteering was different from tombstoning, in that the area is fully surveyed to ensure it is safe.

Tourism minister Martyn Quayle says he's pleased the authority has vindicated the advert, which has helped raise the Island's profile as a quality destination for activity holoidays.
