Funeral of former head teacher

by isleofman.com 13th January 2009
The funeral will take place this afternoon of former head teacher Jack Gair.

Mr Gair, who died on December 30 at the age of 94, devoted his life to the teaching of young people in the Isle of Man and was head teacher of Kirk Michael, Laxey and Willaston primary schools during his career.

He was one of the first to introduce French lessons to junior pupils, started the Ballakermeen High School scout troop and turned down an offer to play football for Bradford City to concentrate on teaching.

Last year he was honoured by the National Union of Teachers for being a member for 75 years.

Mr Gair's funeral service will be at Lonan Parish Church at 1.15pm.
