Bell prepares for budget number eight

by isleofman.com 13th January 2009
The treasury minister says the recent fall in the annual rate of inflation won't make much difference when he presents his eighth budget to Tynwald next month.

Allan Bell says it's likely to have some impact but there are other factors which will have more of an effect, such as the United Kingdom's decision to reduce VAT.

Mr Bell says the fall in inflation from 4.7 to 2.8 per cent will help but there are other problems which have to be overcome.

He told Manx Radio:

"Obviously the reduction in our VAT receipts because of the changes which have taken place in the UK has been a contributory factor to the reduction in the inflation figure.

"But it has a material effect of some ?40 million on my budget expectations for next year and (there are) a number of other areas that are going to cause some problems in putting the budget together."
