Concerns for pier after loss of lighthouse

The washing away of the 15 foot high lighthouse at the end of Port St Mary breakwater has highlighted the need for a closer look at the structure of the pier, according to director of harbours Mike Brew.

The light, which is over 100 years old, was a casualty of yesterday's gales.

Harbour officials have today been checking the site and putting up temporary fencing and Mr Brew says the Alfred Pier will now have to be given a thorough examination (play attached audio file):
