Harriers claim six medals; gold for Astin

There was success for Manx Harriers in the Lancashire Cross-Country Championships at Witton Park in Blackburn on Saturday.

The team clinched six medals, led by Gemma Astin, who emphatically won gold in the under 17 women’s race, leading the race from the early stages.

The senior men's team won silver, as did Nigel Armstrong in his age group.

Keith Gerrard claimed individual bronze as did Chris Quine and Andy Fox in their respective age groups with Murray Lambden just missing out.

In difficult conditions, in the senior men’s event, Kevin Loundes was a fine fifth, Darren Gray seventh, Martin Malone 18th, Nigel Armstrong 20th, Ed Gumbley 23rd, Chris Quine 25th, Gianni Epifani 26th, Christian Varley 29th, Murray Lambden 30th, Andy Fox 31st, Russell Collister 45th, Mike Garrett 46th and Robbie Lambden 87th.

Sarah Curphey was 16th in the senior women’s race; Ben Lambden took ninth place in the under 20 men’s race, with Polly Rogerson seventh in the under 17 women’s event.

In the under 15 girls, Sarah Astin took fourth and Catriona Cox 13th, while Sammy Holt was 22nd in the under 15 boys.

Alice Ashe took ninth place and Sosanna Cox 18th in the under 13 girls; Conor Davies was 13th in the under 11 boys, with an impressive fourth, fifth and sixth place in the under 11 girls for Danielle Barton, Katie Astin and Josie McGarrigle.
