Nomads tighten grip on Shield

by isleofman.com 12th January 2009
Southern Nomads beat Emerging Nomads 27-12 on Saturday to move to within inches of sealing the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield title.

Nomads now need just a single point from their last two games to be crowned champions.

Steve McHugh got Nomads off to an excellent start and two tries from flanker Ross McCulloch had them well on the way to victory before half-time.

Emerging Nomads fought back and a penalty try just before the break left them still in with a shout at 22-7 after Dave Edge’s conversion.

James Hammal went over to seal it for the seniors in the second half and Al Corrin’s conversion made it 27-7 before Dave Edge bagged a late consolation score.

At Poulsom Park, Ramsey B moved into second place in the standings with a 29-11 win over Castletown after a show stopping second half performance when the game was finely poised 7-6 at the break.

Chris Penketh’s first half try, plus a Darren Ideson conversion, gave Ramsey a 7-0 lead but Town hit back with two Sam Peel penalties to move to within a point at the break.

Ramsey cut loose in the second half.

Penketh picked up his second of the game and there were also tries for Andy Wilson, Gareth Hooson-Owen and Chris King.

Dan O’Connor crossed for Castletown’s consolation try.

Vagabonds B saw their slim hopes of a Manx Shield title slip away when they crashed to a 30-10 defeat away at Douglas B.

Douglas led 18-5 at half-time after two tries from debutant Mike Hebden, plus a conversion and two penalties from Bryn Snellgrove.

Daryn Thompson picked up a try for Vagas to keep them in the game.

Douglas pulled away in the second half, however, with tries from Rhey Sharpe and Ryan Maddox, plus another conversion from Snellgrove.

Andre Pretorious bagged a try for Vagas to keep the scoreboard looking respectable.
