'Dips 4 Chris' boost Walmsley travel fund

by isleofman.com 3rd January 2009
It's thought the plucky Southern Dippers have raised more than ?2,500 from this year's New Year's Day event.

A record turnout braved freezing conditions at Chapel Beach in Port St Mary, the inner harbour of the village and the beach at Port Erin.

Many swimmers were in fancy dress, ranging from full biker leathers to milkmaids, and just under 100 people took part. The final swim had a competition for the best fancy dress, with local firm Pokerstars.com donating the prizes.

The winners donated their prize money to this year's nominated charity "Doing Dips 4 Chris" which is supporting local man Chris Walmsley who was seriously injured in a road accident. Mr Walmsley is still receiving intensive care at Bury in Lancashire and the money will help his wife and family visit him.

A presentation will take place early in February when all the sponsor monies have been collected.

It was the eighth time the Southern Dippers have staged the event.
