Flats scheme turned down at appeal

by isleofman.com 3rd January 2009
A company has been told it can’t build 23 flats in Waterloo Road, Ramsey after residents raised concerns about parking.

Carlton Homes - based in Lhoobs Road, Foxdale - had applied to demolish five-storey terraced houses and replace them with a block of apartments.

But the planning committee refused permission, and the company took the matter to appeal.

Carlton Homes said the six-storey block with underground parking would contain affordable housing, and provided two alternative sets of plans.

Jason Roberts reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

Planning Inspector Michael Hurley said the alternative plans were so different, they would need their own planning applications to be considered.

He said the new homes would tower over other buildings and overlook nearby homes, and aggravate parking problems in the area.

Mr Hurley said almost 20 more parking spaces would be needed by those living in the flats, and recommended the scheme be turned down.

DoLGE Minister John Shimmin agreed and dismissed the appeal, throwing out the plans.
