Manx martyr to be remembered

by isleofman.com 2nd January 2009
The contribution made by by Illiam Dhone to the political independence enjoyed by the Isle of Man will be honoured at the traditional Hango Hill commemoration in Castletown today.

In 1663, Illiam Dhone - or William Christian - was stirred by the people of Mann to stop the Island being given back to the English crown.

His decision to side with the Parliamentarians in return for independence has made him a patriot to Manx nationalists. And, as he paid for the act with his life, a martyr too.

Today's ceremony, at 2pm sharp, will see orations in both Manx and English from the spot where Dhone was shot by firing squad that year.

Chairman of nationalist party Mec Vannin Marc Kermode says it's fitting his brave stance continues to be honoured (play attached audio file):

All those at the ceremony are welcome to join a get together at the Viking pub in Castletown.
