Ceremony at Hango Hill today

by isleofman.com 2nd January 2009
The voice of Manx nationalism will ring out at the Illiam Dhone commemoration on Hango Hill in Castletown later.

The ceremony is held annually at the windswept coastal spot where in 1663 William Christian was executed for his rebellion against the Earls of Derby during the English Civil War.

His decision to hand over the Island to parliamentary forces, at risk to his own neck, has made him a Manx patriot and martyr in the eyes of nationalists.

The ceremony is expected to attract more than 100 people.

Marc Kermode (pictured) from Mec Vannin says the speeches may reflect current political concerns (play attached audio file):

Start time for Illiam Dhone commemoration at Hango Hill: Friday, January 2, 2pm.
