The first sporting event of the new year takes place this afternoon.

The St John's Fell Race is the opening round of the 2009 Manx Fell League.

Last year 70 competitors took on the challenge of racing up and down Slieu Whallian Hill through the plantation, with Lloyd Taggart winning in a record time.

Signing on is at St John's Football Club from 1pm, with the race starting an hour later.
