Governmment officials are confident an unoccupied part of the Sea Terminal where there are traces of asbestos will be made completely safe, and brought back into use.
The substance was identified during building work which has been put on hold, while a solution is found which satisfies health and safety inspectors.
The Department of Transport says tests have shown there is no air borne contamination, and it's dismissing a claim by the union Unite that Works Division staff have been exposed to asbestos contamination and the building should be demolished.
Director of Properties Rodney Christopher says health of staff is the number one priority, and if the asbestos can't be removed it's likely it will be 'contained' it in its present location.
He told Manx Radio:
"It's an unoccupied area where we were due to start refurishment works, to bring it back into use following the completion of all the asbestos removal work.
"Concerns have been expressed, particularly because of the design of the ceiling in the area, that there could be asbestos products on the top of the blocks that are used in the ceiling.
"Once we are satisfied, and the regulators are satisfied, that we have done everything appropriate, the area will be re-fitted out and brought into use."
The DoT is stressing the public areas of the Sea Terminal have no identifiable asbestos in them.
