Minister reveals effects of tax changes

by isleofman.com 24th December 2008
Raising the standard rate of income tax in the Isle of Man from ten to eleven per cent would yield an extra ?4 million in tax for the Manx government.

There would be a similar increase in revenue if the higher rate was changed from 18 to 19 per cent.

But freezing personal allowances or removing the ?100,000 tax cap would make relatively little difference.

Those are the conclusions of Treasury Minister Allan Bell in a written reply to Tynwald questions from Rushen MHK Juan Watterson.

Mr Bell says removing the tax cap could lead to wealthy residents, attracted by the favourable arrangement, leaving the Island.

He also says there would be a saving in government costs of ?1.3 million pounds if a two per cent increase in personal allowances was not made.
