MHK's childcare concerns

A MHK is calling for urgent action from the DHSS to deal with what he sees as serious shortcomings in childcare provision, within the Island's social services.

Rushen member Quintin Gill describes as "extremely alarming" the fact that a quarter of the youngsters on the Child Protection Register are being looked after by unqualified social workers, and one senior member of staff has a workload of 23 cases.

With tragic cases in the United Kingdom, such as "Baby P", fresh in the memory, he says it's vital everybody is aware of the potential dangers of such a "high risk strategy".

However, he is welcoming the creation of a "Safeguard Board", which will co-ordinate the care of vulnerable children, across the relevant departments of government (play attached audio file):
