Over ?137,000 has been spent by Tynwald members for travel on government business in the last two years.

The figure was provided by the Treasury in response to a question from Onchan MHK Peter Karran.

He wanted to know the destinations visited by members and the cost to public funds of each visit.

Destinations visited by MHKs and MLCs on departmental or parliamentary business ranged from those nearby - such as Dublin, Manchester and Liverpool - to much farther flung locations, including the USA, Dubai, Korea and Kuala Lumpur.

Treasury Minister Allan Bell and Chief Minister Tony Brown top the list with some of the most expensive trips.

While there is no breakdown of the figures, one trip by the Chief Minister to Washington DC is listed as costing ?5,122 with another by Mr Bell to the same destination coming in at ?5,098.

The Attorney General has an unspecified trip to the USA listed at ?4,288 and business in London for which there was a claim of ?2,600.

On the evidence of these figures alone, Michael MHK David Cannan would appear to be the thriftiest traveller, claiming ?240 for a trip to Kuala Lumpur.
