Knife crime warning from Deemster Doyle

by isleofman.com 18th December 2008
A man who admitted unlawful wounding has been jailed for 18 months.

Thirty-six year-old Gary David Smith of Marathon Road, Douglas went to a house in Heather Crescent, Pulrose on March 2 and punched the occupier, Geoffrey Brown, twice in the face.

He then left and returned with a knife.

Evidence showed there was a scuffle in which Mr Brown received a three-quarter inch stab wound to his chest which required two stitches. He was also cut on his arm.

The court heard Smith had a grievance against Mr Brown and had taken the law into his own hands.

His advocate said the defendant now realised he should not have gone to Mr Brown's house.

Deemster Doyle said possession of a knife in anger was a very serious and aggravating factor and violence never solved anything.

He noted the defendant had issues with anger management and said knife crime wouldn't be tolerated on the Island.
