Go ahead given for Ancestry Centre

by isleofman.com 17th December 2008
The Isle of Man will soon have much more to offer heritage hungry tourists looking to trace their roots.

Tynwald has agreed that there should be a Manx Ancestry Centre, to help residents and visitors find out information about their ancestors.

Despite some concerns about whether ?1.17 million should be spent on such a project in the present financial climate, members were overwhelmingly in support.

It was felt as well as being crucial for the development of the Manx identity, the centre would be an invaluable educational tool as well.

The scheme will see the conversion of the former Government Analyst's laboratory in Kingswood Grove, Douglas.

Manx National Heritage Chairman Phil Gawne says work is due to start on January 6.
