Nomads inch closer to Shield

by isleofman.com 14th December 2008
Southern Nomads thumped an under-strength Douglas B 70-5 to take another step towards the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield title.

James Hammal was the star of the show with five tries and he was joined on the scoresheet by Tom Duggan (two), Rob Keelan, Steve McHugh, Graham Allanson and Harry Brereton.

Al Corrin added to the rout with seven conversions on an enjoyable day for Nomads as they moved closer to a second title in four years.

Johnny Howarth picked up the consolation try for Douglas.

In the battle for the runners-up spot, Vagabonds B staked their claim with a 20-15 win over Ramsey B.

Kevin Riley put Vagas ahead with an early try and when Danny Williams added a penalty they were 8-0 in front and looking comfortable.

Ramsey hit back with a try from Aneurin Pritchard, which was converted by Timmy Healy.

Peter Walkom added a penalty for the northerners and they led 10-8 at half-time.

Vagas came right back in the second half with tries from Kieran Lever and Lee McIvor, plus a conversion from Lever, and they led 20-10 with 10 minutes to play.

A late try from Henry Doran brought Ramsey within striking distance but they were out of time.

In the final Shield game of the day, Castletown picked up their first win of the season with a 7-5 win over Emerging Nomads.

Damian Brand put Nomads in front but a try and conversion from Town stand-off Sam Peel were enough to take the game.
