Heavy goods licensing - what's your view?

by isleofman.com 16th November 2008
The Department of Transport is to hold an additional public consultation meeting regarding plans for a new licensing system for heavy goods vehicles.

There's been considerable interest in the plans and concerns expressed by several haulage firms about the time and cost involved in meeting the new regulations. The DoT says the measures will make the roads safer - by improving standards of maintenance.

The additional meeting will take place next Friday (November 21) at the Keyll Darree lecture theatre at Nobles Hospital.

The public consultation meetings have been held by the Department in order to canvas the views of people affected by the proposed legislation and provide an opportunity for them to influence the policy making decision.

More than 80 hauliers attended a meeting on Tuesday night in Douglas where some concerns were expressed about the proposed system and the way it was being brought in. The new regulations will apply to goods vehicles weighing three-and-a-half tons or more - at present they cover lorries over seven-and-a-half tons.

The Department of Transport says higher maintenance standards will make the roads safer and a new licensing system is long overdue.

Tim Crookall (pictured), the MHK with responsibility for highways, says the meetings held so far have provided some very useful and positive comments and he's urging anyone who has an interest and who wasn't able to attend a meeting last week to go along to the meeting on Friday.

Hauliers have until December 17 to give their responses to the consultation.
