Haulage firms closure threat?

Haulage companies say smaller firms could be forced out of business by proposed regulations which would require them to have a licence to operate.

The Department of Transport wants to introduce a new HGV Operator Licence for goods vehicles weighing over three-and-a-half tons and a consultation is being launched at a public meeting at the Villa Marina in Douglas this evening.

The DoT says the measures will make the roads safer by improving standards of maintenance, but there is concern among smaller firms about the time and cost which would be involved in meeting the requirements.

Graham Taylor who runs Island Timber and Building Supplies claims there has been little warning about tonight's meeting:
