Border merger - ITV had no choice

by isleofman.com 3rd October 2008
The Director of the Isle of Man Communications Commission says loss of advertising revenue meant ITV had no choice but to review its commitment to regional news.

Carmel McLoughlin says in recent years, ITV's revenue has been steadily eroded and is now shared among several hundred commercial TV stations.

The merger of Border with Tyne Tees TV means there will be less coverage of the Isle of Man on Lookaround in future.

The slot has been cut from 30 minutes to 15, and there's concern coverage of Cumbria and the Isle of Man will be reduced to just nine minutes.

On Talking Heads today Ms McCloughlin (pictured) told Stuart Peters it could have been even worse:

"The first proposal was to completely merge ITV Tyne Tees and the Border region.

"Because there was a lot of discontent from the public - including in the Isle of Man, and from Tynwald who actually said they would prefer to receive Granada Television than a combined Border-Tyne Tees - ITV have reviewed their commitments.

"They are proposing 15 minutes of Lookaround. They have said to people in Scotland that they would hope, on average, to have about six minutes of Scottish news, so that's where you get the nine minutes."
