Mill prepares to import wheat

The chairman of Laxey Glen Mills, Colin Brown, says this year's harvest is the worst he can remember and will probably mean wheat will have to imported.

A full evaluation hasn't yet been made, but most of the wheat which is good enough for the mills has been collected in and is nowhere near what is required.

Wheat which doesn't meet the mill's standards will have to be improved via the importation of a special piece of equipment.

Mr Brown says supplies to the mill's largest customer, Ramsey Bakery, will be maintained, but he doesn't think it will be possible to do so using local wheat alone:
