Inquest hears of tragic accident

by isleofman.com 28th August 2008
An inquest has heard how well-known Onchan figure Colin Clague died in a tragic accident while attempting a DIY job.

59-year old Mr Clague, the Chief Financial Officer at Onchan Commissioners, suffered fatal head injuries when he fell from a ladder while attempting to mend a leaking flat roof at his home.

He was rushed to hospital by ambulance on August 15th - and died in intensive care four days later.

The alarm was raised by Mr Clague's daughter who heard a loud noise while her father worked on the roof of a covered passageway at the family home in Highfield Crescent , Birch Hill Park.

There were no witnesses but an account of the circumstances was read in court.

Mr Clague hit his head after falling from the ladder, extended to seven feet above the driveway.

He was found on a raised pathway in front of the house, his head having hit the wall.

It's unclear how far he fell, whether he missed his footing, or the ladder itself moved.

The cause of death was given as extensive sub arachnoid haemorrage

Coroner Alistair Montgomerie returned a verdict of accidental death.

He said Mr Clague was a popular man who lived life to the full - and the thoughts of many people who knew him were with his family.
