MHK demands toxic fly ash answers

by isleofman.com 24th July 2008
Michael MHK David Cannan has raised more concerns about plans to store toxic fly ash from the incinerator in Jurby.

He has written to Education Minister Anne Craine asking whether her department was aware of the proposals.

Last week in Tynwald, Local Government and Environment Minister John Shimmin apologised after admitting the plans were in place but no consultation had been held.

The hangar earmarked to store the material is less than 200 yards away from Jurby Community School.

In his letter, Mr Cannan (pictured) demands to know whether the Department of Education knew about the plans to transport the waste and store it near the school.

He asks the minister whether she is taking any action to reverse the decision and, if not, whether Mrs Craine will take responsibility for any ill-effects suffered by the children.

The move is the latest in a burgeoning campaign in Jurby against the moves.

Earlier this week commissioners issued their response to the proposals, claiming DoLGE was turning their village into a dumping ground.
