Criticism of hospital at inquest

by isleofman.com 24th July 2008
Medical experts from the United Kingdom have criticised Noble’s Hospital, after a woman died the day after giving birth to twins.

Thirty-eight year-old Caroline Weatherill, a well-known local advocate, passed away at the hospital's maternity unit in June 2006.

Evidence showed doctors failed to spot a torn blood vessel which eventually caused heart failure, but the Coroner, Michael Moyle, recorded a verdict of death by natural causes.

The inquest heard Mrs Weatherill had been admitted to hospital and was scheduled to have a vital chest x-ray which could have spotted the problem.

But the hearing was told there were no facilities for routine x-rays out of hours or at weekends.

UK cardiothoracic Specialist Christoper Young said staff should have suspected something was seriously wrong when Mrs Weatherill complained of chest pain and had low blood oxygen levels.

He said in his opinion a chest x-ray was mandatory and not having one was a serious failing.

Consultant obstetrician at Noble's Michael Divers said radiologists were on call but x-rays out of hours were only considered in acute cases.
