Data security - could do better

by isleofman.com 1st July 2008
A review of data security in the Isle of Man has concluded it's robust enough to reassure the public - but there's still room for improvement.

The review was ordered by Treasury Minister Allan Bell, after 25 million UK child benefit records were lost.

The verdict: the Isle of Man government is doing well in keeping our information secure - but cannot afford to be complacent.

The security of personal data held in the DHSS benefit payment system was analysed for the review.

Were safeguards in place to protect data from unlawful or unauthorised processing - or from accidental loss or destruction?

The review confirmed a range of measures ARE in place but there's scope to tighten things still further.

Minister Bell (pictured) says the increased use of technology to exchange sensitive data presents a greater risk - and puts a greater onus on all in the public sector to promote high standards in data security.

The aim now is to keep abreast of best practice - and strengthen policies where needed.
